Alkoxy Terminated Polysiloxane Applications

Alkoxy terminated polysiloxane is a versatile organosilicon intermediate with methoxy reactive groups that can undergo condensation reactions with hydroxyl groups, enabling grafting onto organic compounds. It exhibits slow hydrolysis in the presence of water, leading to the formation of a resin with excellent hydrophobic, anti-adhesive, and aging-resistant properties.

Alkoxy terminated polysiloxane finds applications in various fields such as electronic adhesives (bonding, sealing, fixing, thermal conductivity, coating), industrial adhesives (automotive electronics, solar energy, etc.), and construction adhesives (circulating adhesives, mirror adhesives, stainless steel adhesives, structural adhesives, weather-resistant adhesives, etc.).

It can also serve as a cross-linking agent for silicone rubber, replacing conventional ethyl silicate. Silicone rubber cross-linked with alkoxy terminated polysiloxane exhibits superior tensile strength and elongation compared to silicone rubber cross-linked solely with ethyl silicate.

Alkoxy terminated polysiloxane can be employed as an isolating agent in pressure-sensitive adhesives and as a stabilizer in foam-forming agents. Further hydrolysis can yield effective defoaming agents, release agents, waterproofing agents, anti-stick paper coatings, and water-resistant treatments for powders, including silicone-containing demulsifiers for crude oil dehydration.

FAQ

Q: How are alkoxy terminated polysiloxanes synthesized?

A: They are typically synthesized through reactions involving siloxane monomers and alkoxy - containing reagents. For example, a reaction between a chlorosilane and an alcohol can introduce alkoxy groups at the ends of the growing polysiloxane chain.

Q: What are the physical properties of alkoxy terminated polysiloxanes?

A: They usually have low surface tension, which makes them useful in applications where good wetting properties are required. They also have relatively high thermal stability and are often liquid or low - melting solids at room temperature, depending on the molecular weight and the nature of the alkoxy groups.

Q: How should alkoxy terminated polysiloxanes be stored?

A: They should be stored in a cool, dry place with the original packaging tightly sealed. Exposure to moisture can cause unwanted hydrolysis reactions, and high temperatures can accelerate degradation or unwanted chemical changes. The shelf life is usually indicated on the product label of each batch.
