Principle for the Synthesis of Water-Based Acrylic Polymer

Water-based acrylic polymers are usually copolymerized by acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and their esters or other derivatives, whose properties can be tailored by regulating the compositions, the ratio of various monomers, and the structure of raw materials.

There are many ways to synthesize water-based acrylic polymers (including emulsion, solution polymerization, bulk polymerization, and suspension polymerization), of which emulsion polymerization is the most widely used.

It is synthesized by monomers, emulsifiers, water, and initiators. The synthetic macromolecular chain is mainly composed of a carbon chain, which is divided into a soft segment and a hard segment. The hard segment is mainly composed of hard monomers (methacrylate, styrene, etc.), which can improve the hardness of the resin, and the soft segment mainly contains soft monomers such as acrylate, which can provide flexibility for the resin.

The addition of styrene and acrylonitrile can increase the impact resistance, wear resistance, and mechanical properties of the resin.

Water-Based Acrylic Polymer Application Fields

01/

Dispersants
Water-based acrylic polymers are used in many applications including dispersant stabilization for pigments in paper manufacturing and paints, chute drilling in civil engineering, as well as chelate dispersion and coagulation prevention in textiles and sanitary applications.

02/

Thickeners
Water-based acrylic polymers are used in latexes, paints, adhesives, cosmetics, and more to impart viscosity.

03/

Scale inhibitor
Water-based acrylic polymers are used to control the occurrence of scale deposits in circulating water systems in the boilers or steamers of various factories and refineries, cooling towers for building air conditioning, and washers for glass bottles.

04/

Pressure sensitive adhesives
Water-based acrylic polymers are used in the pressure sensitive adhesives in a variety of tapes, stickers, and labels, such as craft tapes.

Storage Requirements for Water-Based Acrylic Polymers

Water-based acrylic polymers must be stored in an environment with a temperature range of 5°C to 30°C to maintain their chemical stability and prevent quality issues caused by extreme temperatures. The storage area should remain dry, with a recommended relative humidity below 60%, to avoid moisture absorption that could lead to changes in product performance. It is advisable to store the polymers in their original packaging containers, ensuring that the containers are tightly sealed to prevent the ingress of air or moisture. Furthermore, water-based acrylic polymers should be kept away from fire sources, open flames, and strong oxidants to avoid hazardous reactions. To ensure product quality, they should not be co-stored with other chemicals such as acids, alkalis, or organic solvents.

FAQ

Q: How do water - based acrylic polymers dry?

A: As the water evaporates from the formulation, the polymer particles come closer together. The particles then coalesce to form a continuous film.

Q: What are the main components of a water - based acrylic polymer formulation?

A: The main components include acrylic monomers (such as methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, etc.), water as the continuous phase, a polymerization initiator to start the polymerization reaction, and often stabilizers or surfactants to keep the polymer particles dispersed in the water.

Q: What is a water-based acrylic polymer?

A: Water-based acrylic polymers are a type of polymer where water serves as the carrying medium and is used in the formulation of various products. These polymers are commonly found in paints, coatings, adhesives, and other materials.

As one of the leading water-based acrylic polymer manufacturers in China, we warmly welcome you to buy water-based acrylic polymer made in China here from our factory. All our products are with high quality and competitive price.
